LonCEM (London Consortium for High resolution Cryo-electron microscopy) provides academic and industrial users with access to a state-of-the-art high-resolution cryo-electron microscope.
TEM Functionality
Our high-performance transmission electron microscope (TEM) enables the visualisation of organic and biological specimens at near-atomic detail. It is ideal for high thoughput parallel screening and optimising cryo-samples using ThermoFisher EPU Multigrid tool and acquiring high-quality images for down-stream analysis. High throughput Cryo-ET (tomograph) is also parallelized using Tomography Multigrid TOMO5 software.
User Services
- The facility is managed by the facility manager who provides dedicated guidance, assistance, and training tailored to your project needs.
- The facility can accept clipped or unclipped grids with available onsite storage.
On-the-fly Data processing
RELION 5.0 software package enables efficient on-the-fly data processing, allowing users to evaluate the quality of their cryo-EM data during collection. This capability provides immediate feedback on particle distribution, alignment quality, and reconstruction progress, helping researchers make informed decisions about acquisition strategies without waiting for the end of a session. By integrating with the facility’s high-performance computing resources, on-the-fly processing streamlines workflows, reduces time to structure, and maximizes microscope productivity.
Remote Access
Remote access is offered to users via BeyondTrust Remote Support which is an enterprise-grade platform for IT help desks to securely access and control remote computers and devices, including Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS systems.
Data Access
The facility supports data download via Globus, a secure and high-performance file transfer platform widely used across research institutions. Globus enables users to reliably move terabytes of cryo-EM data—including raw movies, aligned micrographs, and reconstruction results—from the facility’s storage systems to their home institution. Transfers are encrypted, checkpointed, and restartable, ensuring data integrity even over long-distance connections. By leveraging Globus, researchers can access their datasets quickly and efficiently, without the limitations of traditional download methods.
User Symposium
The annual LonCEM User Symposium brings together researchers, facility staff, and industry experts to share the latest technical developments and scientific breakthroughs in the field. Designed to keep our user community at the forefront of structural biology, invited talks, and case studies highlighting recent successes. Participants gain up-to-date expertise in emerging methodologies—from cryo-FIB lamella preparation to advanced image processing pipelines—while also learning from pioneering research results enabled by cryo-electron microscopy. The symposium fosters knowledge exchange, collaboration, and best practices that directly benefit ongoing and future projects within the facility.
