Since 2003, together with the School of Medicine Students' Union, Imperial College School of Medicine has held an annual awards programme recognising staff excellence in delivering the School's undergraduate programmes.

The School was delighted to re-launch these awards and to welcome back our colleagues and students to campus to celebrate the achievements of our community in person.

Evolving throughout their 20 years and previously known as the Teaching Excellence Awards, the ICSM Education Awards were retitled for 2023 to best celebrate and recognise the variety of contributions made to the success of our programme delivery across both our Medicine and Medical Biosciences programmes, including through teaching, tutoring and student support.

The next ceremony will take place in July 2024 at our South Kensington campus, as part of an expanded event to bring the ICSM community together for discussion and celebration. This year's winners will be announced on this page shortly.

The awards nomination form is open year-round, but the 2024 cycle is now closed. Nominations submitted from Saturday 20 April 2024 onwards will be considered for the 2025 ceremony.

Inaugural Lecture: Tick, no tock - Understanding abnormal heart rhythm

The 2018 Inaugural Lecture was given by Professor Ken MacLeod.

Heart attacks kill heart muscle. Due to modern rapid treatments and evidence-based therapeutic management, most people now survive their attack, but will remain at a higher risk of cardiovascular-related death than the general population. A major determinant of their prognosis is the size, location and architecture of the scar tissue that replaces the dead heart muscle. The scar tissue itself can disrupt cardiac conduction, while the loss of contractile myocardium induces cell remodelling processes that initially compensate for the reduced contraction but, frustratingly, predispose the remaining myocardium to arrhythmias. Over time, that compensation can break down, and the heart starts to fail in pumping an adequate supply of blood to the body while experiencing further arrhythmia complications. Indeed, heart failure-related death can be broadly split into deaths from ‘pump-failure’ and sudden cardiac death due to disorders of rhythm, with small numbers ascribable to other causes.

Ken MacLeod, Professor of Cardiac Physiology within Imperial’s National Heart and Lung Institute, believes the key to more effective management of these patients is a more complete understanding of cardiac arrhythmias, particularly at the cellular level. In his inaugural lecture, Ken will tell the cellular story of the formation of these arrhythmias and will illustrate why such knowledge is essential for logical drug development, and the careful repurposing of old drugs for new uses.

The 2017 inaugural lecture, 'Food Fight: novel approaches to appetite control', was given by Professor Kevin Murphy, Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Medicine.

Obesity is one of the most significant contemporary health concerns in the UK, affecting around a quarter of adults. In attempts to understand underlying mechanisms, scientists globally are looking to the biological systems that underpin appetite to explain why we over-eat, and to try to prevent obesity. As obesity levels rise, so has our understanding of how the gut senses particular foods to regulate hunger. In particular, amino acids – the “building blocks of proteins” – seem to help us feel full.

Professor Kevin Murphy has nearly twenty years’ experience in his field. In his inaugural lecture, he examined how the gut detects what you have eaten and signals to the brain to influence appetite, arguing that this relationship can determine our eating behaviour. Looking for novel approaches to controlling appetite by hijacking the pathways by which the gut detects protein, Professor Murphy is battling the obesity epidemic by studying what actually happens in the gut when you eat and the molecular mechanisms involved in satiety, and investigating how we can control appetite by hijacking the pathways by which the gut detects protein. The eventual aim is to make foods that are tasty and popular but which punch above their weight, leaving the consumer satisfied even though they have eaten fewer calories.
