This course was created by Professor Barbara Bain at St Mary’s Hospital. It is now taught by Professor Barbara Bain, Dr Subarna Chakravorty and Dr Yvonne Daniel.

It covers the practical aspects of haemoglobinopathy diagnosis including microscopy, blood count interpretation, cellulose acetate and agarose gel electrophoresis and high-performance liquid chromatography. The clinical relevance is emphasised and the most up-to-date molecular techniques are also discussed.

The course is interactive, all cases being reviewed collectively after the participants have made their own diagnoses. Photographs of all cases plus PowerPoint presentations of several key lectures are provided to the participants for the purpose of private study after the course.
