Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will have:
- Recognise current challenges for group-based and collaborative learning;
- Plan group working experiences that clearly set out structure, expectations and support;
- Identify approaches for fostering interpersonal skills and inclusive behaviours;
- Design assessment and feedback that fosters collaborative learning;
- Use evidence-informed approaches to make group working more effective.

Who should attend?
Student groupwork is widely recognised as enabling learning, development of transferable skills and social connections, and professional body accreditation. However, it can also present challenges, including for culturally and socially diverse groups, and disabled and neurodivergent students. While inclusive group work design and mechanisms can help, these may fail to result in inclusive experiences if students are not equipped nor motivated to contribute inclusively themselves.
This half-day workshop is designed to equip teaching staff to plan and facilitate group-based and collaborative learning within their undergraduate or postgraduate programmes. Based on evidence gathered across Imperial departments and beyond, this workshop will integrate student and staff perspectives and research to identify how set up, facilitate and trouble shoot group working. Workshop activities will include identifying contextually-relevant challenges, discussing case studies and strategies, and co-designing group working tools and approaches that improve learning experiences for all and reinforce development of interpersonal skills.

Prerequisite
This workshop assumes an understanding of key principles of teaching and learning. Prior attendance at Introduction to teaching for learning or a comparable workshop is recommended as a prerequisite.
