Who should attend?
This interactive workshop is designed for staff who teach, assess and/or support students in different learning and teaching contexts. It will explore how staff can support students to learn effectively and sustainably.
Empirical evidence from the Ideal Student and SIDUS research highlights a need to enhance wellbeing support for students. Focus group data from the Imperial Learning Well Project indicates that many students either do not recognise or do not prioritise the connection between their study strategies, wellbeing and academic success. It also indicates that a competitive culture can make students reluctant to be perceived as ‘struggling’, potentially delaying help-seeking until their difficulties become more serious. Yet, how often do students have structured opportunities to reflect on how they learn and how their approaches affect their wellbeing? The concept of ‘learning well’ is about more than achieving good grades. It means learning effectively and efficiently in ways that are sustainable and support wellbeing. This is relevant for all students, at every stage of their studies, including those who feel they are doing well as well as those seeking additional guidance.
Drawing on students’ experiences and pedagogical resources from the Imperial Learning Well Project and other relevant initiatives, this workshop will share practical ideas for facilitating positive, inclusive conversations about learning strategies, challenges and wellbeing. Participants will gain ideas for adaptable activities, prompts and approaches that can be integrated into teaching sessions, tutorials, personal tutoring, feedback conversations and other student-support contexts. These approaches can help students build the confidence to discuss and reflect on their learning, explore what works for them and develop a growth mindset that supports them throughout their studies.
