If you have already completed a period of doctoral level study at another institution, it may be possible for the work, activities, progress and assessments already undertaken in your engagement with research to count towards a doctoral course at Imperial.

This recognition of previous successful study is known as advanced standing.

It may also be used to recognise prior experiential learning undertaken as an employee, Research Assistant/Clinical Research Fellow (RAs/CRFs) of Imperial College London, or staff of the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

How to apply for admission with advanced standing

Advanced standing applicants should apply online through our application system, My Imperial.

Once your application is received by your department, they will organise for the Admissions with Advanced Standing Form (.docx) to be sent to the following for review:

  • Director of Postgraduate Studies
  • the Graduate School

If your application to register with advanced standing is approved then you may be admitted to a doctoral course at Imperial for a shorter period of time – though you must complete at least 12 months (full-time) or 24 months (part-time).
