About Imperial's tuition fee refund policy

When you register at Imperial, you’re obligated to pay your tuition fees.

If you drop out or suspend your studies, you will be eligible for a tuition fee refund, though if your course has already started, we'll adjust the refund to take this into account. See below for details. 

To request a refund, you need to email the Student Fees team at tuition.fees@imperial.ac.uk but we first recommend reading the information below to understand our refund policy.


Refunds for undergraduate students

Undergraduate students interrupting or withdrawing from their course during the academic session will be charged a pro-rata fee based on:

  • the relevant full year fee (or their contribution to the full-year fee); and
  • the number of weeks or any part thereof studied e.g. 26 weeks and 2 days will be calculated at 27 weeks. A normal academic session lasts 31 weeks though some courses may last longer than this, which will be factored into the calculation.

We will refund you any balance of fees paid above the pro-rata fee.

If you are interrupting your studies, the balance may be held on account for use against the balance of fees once you resume your studies.

Sponsored students

If your fee (or part of your fee) is being paid by a sponsor, we will charge the sponsor the pro-rata fee and refund the rest on the same basis as above.


Refunds for postgraduate students

Postgraduate students interrupting or withdrawing from their course and postgraduate research students entering writing up during the academic session will be charged a pro-rata fee based on:

  • the relevant full year fee (or their contribution to the full year fee); and
  • the number of weeks or any part thereof studied during an academic session of 52 weeks e.g. 26 weeks and 2 days will be calculated at 27 weeks

We will refund you any balance of fees paid above the pro-rata fee.

If you are interrupting your studies, the balance may be held on account for use against the balance of fees once you resume your studies.

Sponsored students

If your fee (or part of your fee) is being paid by a sponsor, we will charge the sponsor the pro-rata fee and refund the rest on the same basis as above.
