Eligibility criteria
Evidence of ABRSM Grade 8 distinction (or equivalent, including other international musical qualifications). A copy of the mark sheet is required (not the certificate).
A reference from the instrumental/vocal teacher must be sent with the application.
A letter from the applicant detailing relevant musical experience is required.
In exceptional circumstances, a high merit may sometimes be acceptable if supported by excellent references.
Please note: This scholarship is available to new entrants only. Students already studying the course are not eligible.
Course specific information
The scholarships are available for three years of a first undergraduate course. In exceptional circumstances, the tenure of the scholarship may be extended beyond three years.
Scholars will be expected to arrange lessons with their Royal College of Music professor to fit in with their academic timetable.

Applicants should provide their contact details (postal address, email address and telephone number), specifying the department to which their application is being made. References should be included with applications.
The closing date for applications is 28 February 2027.
Please note that some departments may make conditional offers after this date. Candidates should not wait for the academic offer before making an application.
Auditions
A shortlist will be drawn up shortly after the deadline and auditions will then be held during the Easter vacation. Applicants will be asked to perform two contrasting pieces (on one instrument only) of not more than ten minutes in total. There will also be a sight-reading test.
A professional accompanist will be provided at the audition. Non-pianists should note that one piece may be unaccompanied, but at least one work should be performed as a duo.
International applicants who would find the audition in London impracticable should clearly state their intention to make an overseas application. They will be expected to provide a recent video file of two contrasting works, not exceeding 10 minutes in duration. Each media file should not exceed 4GB. If files are larger in size, applicants should convert or compress the file. Audio files will not be accepted.
Overseas applicants should send in all initial paperwork by email before the closing date and, if shortlisted, will be invited to submit their video files to o.gooch@imperial.ac.uk by the day of the live audition.
Successful applicants will be notified within two or three days of the auditions.

Additional information
On the retirement of Professor Sir Eric Ash FRS, Rector of Imperial College from 1986 to 1993, Imperial College Trust, which funds the scheme, decided to change the name of the scholarships to Ash Music Scholarships to mark Sir Eric's profound interest in and support of music at Imperial.
Each year the top scholar will be awarded the Coldstream Guards' Scholarship, which will entitle the holder to £100 per year as well as the Ash award.
The scholarships are tenable for three years of a first undergraduate course. In exceptional circumstances, the tenure of the scholarship may be extended beyond three years. Scholars will be expected to arrange lessons with their Royal College of Music professor to fit in with the academic timetable.
Holders of awards will be expected to take part in the College's musical life, typically through Imperial College Symphony Orchestra or one of Imperial's choirs. There are also many other instrumental and vocal ensembles on campus, providing a wealth of performance opportunities.
