Eligibility criteria

This scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit.

Eligible applicants must satisfy the conditions below by Monday 23rd February 2026:

  • Must have been assessed with a Home fee status
  • Must identify as being of Black heritage
  • Must complete an application via UCAS for one of the full-time undergraduate degrees in the Department of Mathematics at Imperial College London starting in October 2026. (Note that the Joint Mathematics and Computing BSc/MSci Programme does not qualify for the R W Barnes Scholarship.)

Please note: This scholarship is not available to continuing students.

Application process

Stage 1: Apply for one of the eligible undergraduate degree courses at Imperial College London

You must submit a UCAS application for study within the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Department of Mathematics 

 

Stage 2: Complete the R W Barnes Scholarship Application

Please visit the Department of Mathematics website to complete the application form.

 

Application Deadline

Applicants should apply for an eligible course in the Department of Mathematics and submit the scholarship application by 11:59pm (UK local time), Monday 23rd February 2026.

 

Value of the Award

The successful scholar will receive a cash bursary of £16,500 per annum. The scholar can choose to receive the full amount as a maintenance grant, or use part of it to pay the relevant tuition fees, with any remaining funds leftover to be paid as a maintenance grant. The award is for a maximum of 4 years, excluding repeat periods of study.

 

Outcome of the Award

The successful applicant will be notified by email no later than 31st July 2026. If you have not heard from us by this date, please assume you have been unsuccessful in your application.

The successful scholar may be expected to meet informally with the donor on occasions, participating in events surrounding this scholarship, or be required to submit a short statement of progress that will be shared with donors.

This award is for students starting in the academic year 2026/27 and cannot be deferred. All scholarships are awarded subject to students accepting award Terms and Conditions. Please note that the award is conditional upon you receiving an unconditional offer to study at Imperial by September 2026. Continuation of a Scholarship is subject to the Scholar maintaining satisfactory academic progress as defined by Imperial.
