Course overview
This course provides a rigorous grounding in geotechnical engineering, combining advanced soil mechanics, laboratory testing, numerical modelling and engineering design with specialist knowledge of offshore geotechnics. Through a balanced programme of theoretical study, practical laboratory work and design-based learning, you'll develop the skills needed to investigate, model and solve complex geotechnical engineering problems.
Building on this strong foundation, the course explores the geotechnical challenges associated with offshore infrastructure. You'll study marine site investigation, the behaviour of seabed soils, offshore foundation systems and their design, alongside the broader engineering principles that underpin civil and offshore infrastructure.
You'll gain first-hand experience of experimental soil mechanics in our purpose-built laboratories and apply your knowledge through an industry-informed design project and research dissertation supervised by leading academics.
Whether you're a recent graduate or an experienced engineer, this course will equip you with the advanced technical knowledge and practical skills required for careers in geotechnical consulting, offshore engineering and infrastructure development, or for further study at PhD level.

Core modules
Discuss, prepare and run a Finite Element (FE) analysis of a geotechnical problem and compare between numerical and analytical solutions.
Uncover the theory behind the methods of analysis available for geotechnical design and understand the assumptions behind different methods.
Learn from experts in industry on current developments in the field and explore present prominent projects from all over the world.
Liaise with an industrial client in groups to develop, design, and assess a solution for an offshore renewable energy project. You'll apply interdisciplinary knowledge to tackle real-world challenges in offshore renewable energy, develop practical skills for designing structures resilient to dynamic offshore conditions, cultivate teamwork and project management skills, and communicate complex design proposals effectively.
Develop your geotechnical skills in the natural environment on three separate field trips spaced through the academic year. Gain first-hand experience of real-world rock/soils, geological setting, geohazards and construction projects.
Master the fundamentals of hydrodynamic loading and structures in an offshore environment. This module will introduce to you wave theories and help you gain a fundamental understanding of fluid loading.
Analyse the design of rigorous geotechnical laboratory testing programmes, and develop the critical skill and ability to recognise and assess experimental errors.
This module will delve into the current techniques used in site geotechnical and geophysical exploration, soil characterisation, and basic design approaches for a number of foundation elements often used in offshore structures, such as suction caissons, piles, anchors and spudcans, as well as elements of pipeline geotechnics.
Develop your understanding of the flow of water in soil strata under both steady state conditions (seepage) and transient conditions (consolidation).
Build upon basic principles of soil mechanics to establish modern frameworks for describing the behaviour of clays and sands under a variety of loading conditions using Critical State Soil Mechanics theory.
Gain a grounding in the basic concepts and principles of structural dynamics, part of the integrated load analysis in offshore renewables. This module will train you in the idealization, analytical formulation, and mathematical solution of dynamic phenomena in structural engineering.
Learn how to assess the behaviour of foundations, retaining structures, slopes and earthworks, considering soil–structure interaction, groundwater effects and long-term ground performance to develop safe and effective engineering solutions.
During the Summer Term, you will undertake an independent research project under the supervision of leading academics in Geotechnical Engineering.
Projects may span the full breadth of the discipline, including laboratory and field-based experimentation, advanced numerical modelling, discrete element modelling, data-driven and statistical methods, constitutive and theoretical developments, geotechnical design, offshore and earthquake engineering, geoenvironmental processes, and the development or evaluation of industry guidance standards and codes of practice.

This MSc degree has accreditation pending from the Engineering Council by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM), comprising:

The fee applies per application and not per course.
The application fees for postgraduate courses are:
