Explore how plants grow and regenerate, how they capture energy from sunlight, and how they interact with the microbes around them.
Plants are the foundation of our food supply, and understanding how they work is central to tackling food security, sustainable farming and a changing climate.
Rather than working through a long series of lectures, you will spend most of your time doing research. You will carry out two substantial projects alongside active research groups, learning modern laboratory and analytical skills used in plant and microbial science, from genetic techniques and microscopy to handling and interpreting large biological datasets.
By graduation, you will have hands-on experience of how fundamental discovery translates into more resilient, disease-resistant crops, and a strong platform for a PhD or a career in research, biotechnology and agritech.

Core modules
The first research project begins with intensive practical molecular biology skills training.
You’ll pick from a range of topics offered by the molecular plant and microbial sciences research groups.
After choosing your project, you’ll produce a literature survey and research outline, before embarking on lab work.
Your work will be assessed by presentations, an individual research project report and a viva.
You'll also carry out a second research project, which incorporates a literature survey and outline proposal.
The second project must be on a different topic to the first project, and should normally have a different supervisory team.

If you are applying for a Master’s course, you will need to pay an application fee before submitting your application.
The fee applies per application and not per course.
The application fees for postgraduate courses are:
- £90 for all Master's applications, excluding those to Imperial Business School
- £125 for MSc applications to Imperial Business School
- £150 for MBA applications to Imperial Business School
There is no application fee for Postgraduate Certificates, Postgraduate Diplomas, or courses such as PhDs and EngDs. This includes MRes and PhD combined (1+3) courses with the Centre for Doctoral Training.

Your fee is based on the year you enter the university, not your year of study. This means that if you repeat a year or resume your studies after an interruption, your fees will only increase by the amount linked to inflation.
