A Multi-Room Transition Dataset for Blind Estimation of Energy Decay
, Pages: 299-303We present an acoustic room impulse response dataset focusing on multi-room environments characterized by complex geometries and acoustic conditions. The dataset is accompanied by positional information and visual documentation in the form of 360° photographs. Additionally, we present a method to estimate acoustic energy decay functions from noisy, reverberant speech signals. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method based on experiments conducted with the presented dataset.

Blind Identification of Binaural Room Impulse Responses From Smart Glasses
, IEEE ACM Transactions on Audio Speech and Language Processing, Vol: 32, Pages: 4052-4065, ISSN: 2329-9290Smart glasses are increasingly recognized as a key medium for augmented reality, offering a hands-free platform with integrated microphones and non-ear-occluding loudspeakers to seamlessly mix virtual sound sources into the real-world acoustic scene. To convincingly integrate virtual sound sources, the room acoustic rendering of the virtual sources must match the real-world acoustics. Information about a user's acoustic environment however is typically not available. This work uses a microphone array in a pair of smart glasses to blindly identify binaural room impulse responses (BRIRs) from a few seconds of speech in the real-world environment. The proposed method uses dereverberation and beamforming to generate a pseudo reference signal that is used by a multichannel Wiener filter to estimate room impulse responses which are then converted to BRIRs. The multichannel room impulse responses can be used to estimate room acoustic parameters which is shown to outperform baseline algorithms in the estimation of reverberation time and direct-to-reverberant energy ratio. Results from a listening experiment further indicate that the estimated BRIRs often reproduce the real-world room acoustics perceptually more convincingly than measured BRIRs from other rooms of similar size.

Exploring Sauna Impulse Responses
, Pages: 8160-8169Sauna is an important element of Finnish tradition and culture, and its properties and features deserve preservation and archiving. Additionally, extreme temperature and humidity in a sauna comprise a unique environment for researching room acoustics in unusual atmospheric conditions. In the present study, we publish a dataset of room impulse response (RIR) measurements of a sauna during the process of warming up and throwing water on the stove. We explore several features of the dataset, such as the impact of the temperature and humidity distributions on the time-of-arrival of reflections, the atmospheric absorption of sound, and the spectral coloration of measured RIRs. The results of this research show the influence of environmental factors on RIRs and allow an insight into the distinct room acoustics of a sauna while heating up.

Synthesizing Source Directivity using DeepONet Room Acoustic Predictions
, Pages: 9384-9392Incorporating source directivity when simulating spatial room impulse responses for virtual environments is crucial for achieving natural results. Directly injecting the directional source as the initial condition for a wave equation to solve would require re-running a numerical solver for each new directivity pattern, source position or orientation. Here, we show that learned surrogate models can lead to large efficiency benefits if such variation shall be simulated. Although training such models is a computationally expensive process, performing inference over them is typically fast. We show how to exploit that property by training a deep neural operator network (DeepONet) only using omnidirectional sources, and predicting the pressure on a variable grid of points, to which directivity filters are applied to generate arbitrary patterns. We show the fit of directivity patterns to their re-synthesized versions from the output of a DeepONet.

BINAURAL DARK-VELVET-NOISE REVERBERATOR
, Pages: 246-253, ISSN: 2413-6700Binaural late-reverberation modeling necessitates the synthesis of frequency-dependent inter-aural coherence, a crucial aspect of spatial auditory perception. Prior studies have explored methodologies such as filtering and cross-mixing two incoherent late reverberation impulse responses to emulate the coherence observed in measured binaural late reverberation. In this study, we introduce two variants of the binaural dark-velvet-noise reverberator. The first one uses cross-mixing of two incoherent dark-velvet-noise sequences that can be generated efficiently. The second variant is a novel time-domain jitter-based approach. The methods’ accuracies are assessed through objective and subjective evaluations, revealing that both methods yield comparable performance and clear improvements over using incoherent sequences. Moreover, the advantages of the jitter-based approach over cross-mixing are highlighted by introducing a parametric width control, based on the jitter-distribution width, into the binaural dark velvet noise reverberator. The jitter-based approach can also introduce time-dependent coherence modifications without additional computational cost.

Fade-in Reverberation in Multi-room Environments Using the Common-Slope Model
In multi-room environments, modelling the sound propagation is complex due to the coupling of rooms and diverse source-receiver positions. A common scenario is when the source and the receiver are in different rooms without a clear line of sight. For such source-receiver configurations, an initial increase in energy is observed, referred to as the “fade-in” of reverberation. Based on recent work of representing inhomogeneous and anisotropic reverberation with common decay times, this work proposes an extended parametric model that enables the modelling of the fade-in phenomenon. The method performs fitting on the envelopes, instead of energy decay functions, and allows negative amplitudes of decaying exponentials. We evaluate the method on simulated and measured multi-room environments, where we show that the proposed approach can now model the fade-ins that were unrealisable with the previous method.

Barriers and facilitators to sustainable operating theatres: a systematic review using the Theoretical Domains Framework

Operating theatres in particular are a major contributor of greenhouse gas emissions and waste, and while there are several evidence-based guidelines to reduce this impact, these are often not followed. We systematically reviewed the literature to identify barriers and facilitators of sustainable behaviour in operating theatres, categorising these using the TheoreticalDomains Framework (TDF).Method:Medline, Embase, PsychInfo, and Global Health databases were searched for articles published between January 2000- June 2023, using the concepts: barriers and facilitators, sustainability, and surgery. Two reviewers screened abstracts from identified studies, evaluated quality, and extracted data. Identified determinants weremapped to TDF domains and further themes as required.Findings:Twenty-one studies were selected for analysis and assessment (seventeen surveys and four interview studies) comprising 8286 participants, including surgeons, nurses and anaesthetists. Eighteen themes across ten TDF domains were identified. The mostcommon barriers to adoption of green behaviours in operating theatres were in domains of: ‘knowledge’ (N=18) e.g. knowledge of sustainable practices;‘environmental context and resources’ (N=16) e.g.‘personnel shortage and workload and inadequate recycling facilities; ‘social influences’ (N=9) e.g. lack ofleadership/organisational mandate or support; ‘beliefs about consequences’ (N=9) e.g. concerns regarding safety. Intention was the most common facilitator, with eleven studies citing it.Discussion:Despite intentions to adopt sustainable practices in operating theatres, this review identifies several barriers to doing so. Interventions should focus on mitigating these, especially by improving staff's knowledge of sustainability practices and working within the environmental context and time pressures. Interconnection-based model order reduction - a survey
, European Journal of Control, Vol: 75, ISSN: 0947-3580In this survey we present in an organic, complete, and accessible style the interconnection framework for model order reduction. While this framework originally started as a revisitation of the moment matching method, in the last 15 years it has expanded to provide solutions to the model order reduction problem for general classes of systems, such as nonlinear, time-delay, stochastic, and hybrid, and to give insight on topics as diverse as circuit analysis and optimal control. The main theme of the paper is the characterization of “interconnection behaviors” as primary properties to be maintained by the reduction process. The survey is enriched by historical notes on the development of the interconnection framework.

A total cost of ownership analysis of zero emission powertrain solutions for the heavy goods vehicle sector
, Journal of Cleaner Production, Vol: 434, ISSN: 0959-6526Transport-related activities represented 34% of the total carbon emissions in the UK in 2022 and heavy-duty vehicles (HGVs) accounted for one-fifth of the road transport greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Currently, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are considered as suitable replacements for diesel fleets. However, these technologies continue to face techno-economic barriers, creating uncertainty for fleet operators wanting to transition away from diesel-powered internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs). This paper assesses the performance and cost competitiveness of BEV and FCEV powertrain solutions in the hard-to-abate HGV sector. The study evaluates the impact of battery degradation and a carbon tax on the cost of owning the vehicles. An integrated total cost of ownership (TCO) model, which includes these factors for the first time, is developed to study a large retailer's HGV fleet operating in the UK. The modelling framework compares the capital expenditures (CAPEX) and operating expenses (OPEX) of alternative technologies against ICEVs. The TCO of BEVs and FCEVs are 11% to 33% and 37% to 78% higher than ICEVs; respectively. Despite these differences, by adopting a longer lifetime for the vehicle it can effectively narrow the cost gap. Alternatively, cost parity with ICEVs could be achieved if BEV battery cost reduces by 56% or if FCEV fuel cell cost reduces by 60%. Besides, the pivot point for hydrogen price is determined at £2.5 per kg. The findings suggest that BEV is closer to market as its TCO value is becoming competitive, whereas FCEV provides a more viable solution than BEV for long-haul applications due to shorter refuelling time and lower load capacity penalties. Furthermore, degradation of performance in lithium-ion batteries is found to have a minor impact on TCO if battery replacement is not required. Humans mindlessly treat AI virtual agents as social beings, but this tendency diminishes among the young: evidence from a Cyberball experiment
, Human Behavior and Emerging Technologies, Vol: 2024, ISSN: 2578-1863The "social being" perspective has largely influenced the design and research of AI virtual agents. Do humans really treat these agents as social beings? To test this, we conducted a 2 between (Cyberball condition: exclusion vs. fair play) ×2 within (co-player type: AGENT vs. HUMAN) online experiment employing the Cyberball paradigm; we investigated how participants (N = 244) responded when they observed an AI virtual agent being ostracised or treated fairly by another human in Cyberball, and we compared our results with those from human-human Cyberball research. We found that participants mindlessly responded to the ostracised agent as they would to other humans by applying the social norm of inclusion during the interaction. This finding suggests that individuals tend to mindlessly treat AI virtual agents as social beings, supporting the media equation theory; however, age (no other user characteristics) influenced this tendency, with younger participants less likely to mindlessly apply the inclusion norm. We also found that participants showed increased sympathy towards the ostracised agent, but they did not devalue the human player for their ostracising behaviour; this indicates that participants did not mindfully perceive AI virtual agents as comparable to humans. Furthermore, we uncovered two other exploratory findings: the association between frequency of agent usage and sympathy, and the carryover effect of positive usage experience. Our study advances the theoretical understanding of the human side of human-agent interaction. Practically, it provides implications for the design of AI virtual agents, including the consideration of social norms, caution in human-like design, and age-specific targeting.

Timbre space: on the flat history of a multidimensional metaphor
, Music & Science, Vol: 7, ISSN: 2059-2043This article reflects on the “flat” history of timbre space, tracking its emergence as a technical inscription in psychoacoustic experiments and its rise to become a dominant conceptual metaphor in timbre studies. Drawing on Bruno Latour's notion of “immutable mobiles,” the author shows how the idea of a multidimensional timbre space has been propagated through the circulation of diagrams, which make perceptual data on listeners accessible to remote viewers. After surveying laboratory tools and techniques required for the production of these diagrams, the article considers how models of timbre space have been built into new technologies for music composition, performance, and listening, as well as into audio classification schemes and metadata formatting standards like MPEG-7. Mapping connections between psychoacoustic discourses and design practices, the article sheds light on the technoscientific origins of timbre space, examining its articulation to research labs at Bell, CCRMA, and IRCAM, and interrogating its role in determining what counts as sound knowledge.

Cortical signatures of auditory looming bias show cue-specific adaptation between newborns and young adults.
, Commun Psychol, Vol: 2Adaptive biases in favor of approaching, or "looming", sounds have been found across ages and species, thereby implicating the potential of their evolutionary origin and universal basis. The human auditory system is well-developed at birth, yet spatial hearing abilities further develop with age. To disentangle the speculated inborn, evolutionary component of the auditory looming bias from its learned counterpart, we collected high-density electroencephalographic data across human adults and newborns. As distance-motion cues we manipulated either the sound's intensity or spectral shape, which is pinna-induced and thus prenatally inaccessible. Through cortical source localisation we demonstrated the emergence of the bias in both age groups at the level of Heschl's gyrus. Adults exhibited the bias in both attentive and inattentive states; yet differences in amplitude and latency appeared based on attention and cue type. Contrary to the adults, in newborns the bias was elicited only through manipulations of intensity and not spectral cues. We conclude that the looming bias comprises innate components while flexibly incorporating the spatial cues acquired through lifelong exposure.
