At Imperial’s Department of Chemical Engineering, research is not just about discovery; it’s about making a difference to society, industry and the planet. Professor Camille Petit Director of Research

The Department of Chemical Engineering stands at the forefront of a new golden age in chemical engineering. Our research tackles pressing global challenges—such as cutting carbon emissions, advancing clean energy and infrastructure, and driving healthcare innovation—through multiscale, translational work that spans molecular to mega‑scale systems.

We partner with leading industry players to ensure immediate real‑world impact. We help bring ideas to market via spin‑out companies and intellectual property licensing, while maintaining ongoing public dialogue to keep our research relevant and inspiring.

Our team blends expertise in advanced mathematical modelling, process systems engineering, and both small‑ and large‑scale experimental methods—often using those techniques first developed in‑house. We combine fundamental insight with practical tools to support innovation at every scale.

We are proud to be the academic home of Roger Sargent, widely recognised as the “father of Process Systems Engineering”—a legacy that continues to shape our strengths in control, optimisation, and systems‑based engineering.

This rich mix of skills, approaches and research teams help explain why we consistently rank among the top three chemical engineering departments in the UK and globally.
