The Technical Services supply support and back-up for the day-to-day needs of the Department’s teaching and research activities. This support is provided by a cadre of highly skilled technicians, most of whom are organised into the following key services and Chemical Engineering stores:

Services

Analytical Services

Analytical Services is home to more than 20 major analytical instruments and a collection of useful general laboratory equipment in a purpose-built modern laboratory.

Training and assistance is provided to all users, from student and research members of the Chemical Engineering Department to the wider Imperial community. Our aim is to encourage users of the service to obtain the highest functionality from all instruments regardless of their experience, in a safe, clean working environment. Many of the instruments come equipped with an autosampler thus freeing up the time required to be spent in the laboratory.

Any queries from external parties should be directed to Patricia Carry, Head of Analytical Services.

Mechanical Workshop

Workshop The Chemical Engineering Workshop is supported by full time technicians and specialises in the design and manufacture of prototype equipment required for the Department's research work. The Workshop is divided into two separate areas: the main workshop and a student workshop.

The main workshop specialises in larger scale projects and offers a wider range of services. The workshop provides useful advice at project conception, assists in equipment design (utilising computer aided design systems) and provides a full range of manufacturing services on a wide range of machinery, including the use of computer controlled (CNC) machines for novel chemical engineering research equipment.

The student workshop is a dedicated area providing advice and instruction to students, allowing them to produce their own smaller scale apparatus whilst familiarising themselves with safe Workshop practices and procedures.

For more information please contact the Mechanical Workshop Manager Samuel Jones

Electronics

Electronic Services The electronics workshop provides electronics technical support to the teaching and research operations of the department. Our services cover the following:

  • Maintenance of undergraduate laboratories and construction of new teaching equipment.
  • Provision of electronics support services to the CO2 pilot plant.
  • Repair and servicing of existing laboratory equipment and development of new equipment to special requirements.
  • Carry out portable appliance testing (PAT) safety checks for departmental electrical equipment.
  • Provide first line audio and visual support to lecture theatres and seminar rooms.

We offer a complete service from initial advice to the final construction of electronics equipment. Some examples of equipment built in-house are heating and cooling controllers, USB data loggers, power supplies and motor speed control systems.
