Intro to Design Thinking
- Don Norman is one of the great thinkers in the design world and shares some of his ideas in the following talks:
- Design is not only decoration. Paola Antonelli's work investigates design's influence on everyday experience, often including overlooked objects and practices, and combining design, architecture, art, science and technology:
- Tim Brown, CEO of IDEO, urges designers to think big.
- A powerful illustration of the power of integration of design and engineering for bionic prosthetics by Hugh Herr from the MIT Media Lab.
- Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men, "Invisible Women" by Caroline Criado Perez explores how incomplete data gathering leads to bad (and sometimes dangerous) design.
- Understanding which problem to solve and how to test if your solution is working is vital to being an effective Design Engineer:
Core Engineering Skills
- 3Blue1Brown makes some of the best maths videos on the internet. It would put you in a very strong position if you watched the- Essence of Linear Algebra and Essence of Calculus series. The channel also offers some fascinating material to get you started on machine learning, proofs and fractals.
- If you would like to brush up on your high school maths with some questions, Khan Academy provides a vast maths universe to explore (and Brilliant can push you further than before).
- If you're very keen to learn some code before you arrive, Codeacademy's Python course is a great place to start.
- Introduction to 3D printing and 4D printing.
- Design Engineering - Materials - YouTube - first year materials lectures.
- Design Engineering - Manufacturing - YouTube - first year workshop sessions with mills and lathes.
