To start the year, you should have a standard pencil case of equipment. If you find the need for additional items, we suggest considering purchasing them. Craft tools will be available to borrow in the workshop, so it is not essential for you to own a set. Included below is a list of equipment that students found useful in their first year.

Stationery

Stationery (pens, calculators, tablet, notebook) on a table

Basic Stationery

  • Pens
    • Some basic ballpoint pens.
    • A couple of drawing pens with different thicknesses.
(e.g. Staedtler Pigment Liner Marker Pens and Sakura Pens Pigma Micron)
    • A black Sharpie.
  • Pencils
    • Mechanical pencils are generally reliable and save the need for a pencil sharpener.
  • Eraser
  • Ruler
  • Calculator
    • You will be issued with a calculator for your examinations. It is not necessary to purchase the same model for everyday use (e.g. non-exam work) if you have a scientific calculator already.
  • Post-it notes

Additional stationery (not essential)

  • Good coloured pens
    • Copic markers and Staedtler Pro Markers are popular.
  • Electronics:
    • Many students have found a basic graphics tablet to be useful for their projects in the Design modules. These are not of a high specification or cost and are quite useful for drawing designs in your projects. Alternatively, an iPad or other tablet computer can be used for the same purpose.
    • A computer mouse for 2D and 3D computer-aided design.
