Imperial’s approach to AI is active, critical and strategic. This includes balancing carefully governed use of commercial tools with investment in institutional capability, shared infrastructure and open approaches, informed by expertise across the university.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a core theme of our Digital Plan. Through staff training, cross‑university working groups and communities such as the AI Futurists, we are building confidence and critical judgement so AI is used where it clearly adds value.  

We are also alert to risks around dependency, cost, sustainability and supplier behaviour. These are managed through diversification, clear governance and ongoing review.

Overall, our aim is informed engagement: using AI to enhance work and advance science for humanity, while challenging assumptions and being clear about when its use is not appropriate. 

Using AI 

AI can be a useful, everyday tool for our professional services teams, students, academics and researchers. When used well, it can help make work quicker and easier, support decision-making, and free up time to focus on the parts of the job that you really enjoy and need your insight. 

AI can help with things like drafting and summarising documents, analysing data, answering common questions, and spotting patterns or potential issues. Used responsibly and securely, it can boost productivity, improve consistency, and cut down on repetitive tasks, helping you get results while still using your professional judgement.

MS Copilot is Microsoft’s AI assistant built into the tools many people already use at work, like Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams and your Edge browser.

GitHub Copilot is an AI-powered coding assistant developed by GitHub that helps developers write code more quickly and with fewer errors. It can suggest code in real time, understand context from your file, write documentation, and run agentic workflows.
It also supports models from Anthropic (Claude), Google (Gemini), and OpenAI (GPT/Codex).

HEX is our AI‑focused research computing platform, operated by the Research Computing Service. It is designed specifically to support AI and machine learning for research and teaching across the university. Built on modern GPU infrastructure and AI software stacks, it's suitable for training and running advanced AI models.

My Imperial Campus is our official mobile app for students, designed to put day‑to‑day campus life in one personalised place. It has an AI‑powered search within the app, making it quicker and easier to find information.

Jira (Rovo)

Rovo can be found in Jira, and is an AI assistant that helps teams find, understand, and act on information across the platform. It can automate tasks such as creating Jira tickets from notes, summarising work items or sprint updates, organising backlogs, and routing or enriching requests.

MS Teams (with premium licence)

Teams Premium provides AI-powered features designed to enhance meeting productivity, focusing heavily on intelligent automation and personalised insights. Intelligent Recap is a key feature for meetings, which includes AI-generated notes, tasks, and highlights. You also get live translation captions in 40 languages and personalised timeline markers to track when you joined, left, or were mentioned.
